How Do You Rate Yourself?

Just yesterday I received the book "Pragmatic Thinking and Learning: Refactor Your Wetware" by Andy Hunt. I browsed through the TOC, read the introduction and started the second chapter "Journey from Novice to Expert". Even though it was quite late in the night, I just couldn't put the book down until I finished this chapter.

JVM Language Summit - last day

The final day of the language summit sported loads of interesting
presentations, just like the first two days. I can’t over stress how
well prepared these three days have been - especially with regards to
the schedule. A huge thanks to Brian Goetz, John Rose and Charles
Nutter, for being the main instigators and coordinators of this effort.
Very nice work indeed.

JVM Language Summit - first day

Just came back from the first day of the JVM language summit, and
it’s been a very interesting day indeed. I made some bad morning
choices - and spending some time fighting Notes - so I ended up
arriving ten minutes into the first presentation.
The JVM language summit is a three day event organized by Sun, and
the collection of people in the room is quite impressive. There are
about 80 people...

JVM Language Summit 2008 Report

Thoughtworker and DZone MVB blogger Ola Bini recently attended and blogged from the JVM Language Summit that took place in Santa Clara, California last month. The JVM Summit is a three day event organized by Sun Microsystems, bringing together some of the brightest minds from the Java community -- language designers, compiler writers, tool builders, runtime

the Spring Application Platform can get the Java EE 6 Web Profile

Rule Engines and Performance Misconceptions

performance. They seem to struggle on why you can hand craft some java
code and get better performance than a rule engine, and then wonder
what the value of a rule engine is. For most veterans this is obvious,
it's always possible for an experience developer to write faster code
if you write a custom algorithm with all the correct...

Microsoft Visual Studio - Oslo

The recent announcement that Microsoft is joining the OMG is a major step to provide modeling solutions at different abstraction levels. Furthermore, the announcement is another indicator for a shift in thoughts about modeling within Microsoft, where DSLs (not based on UML) were the favorites until recently. I personally think that this change in modeling strategy is a victory of common sense,...

RESTful Development

Web-based systems have to perform increasingly complex
functionality, a lot of which is client-side, but a hefty portion of it
requires complex server-side development. That complex web development
is becoming reliant on implementing RESTful architectural principles,
similar to those found in Ruby on Rails.
A new wave of RESTful development is aimed at the Entprise in the guise

Architectural Shelf Life

Architectures are often thought of having an useful life but that life
is usually hard to predict. Most of the time it is determined by how
much pain an organization is experiencing in trying to extend it to the
current business needs. After giving this some thought, I think I can
state that an architecture typically has a 10, to at most 15 year
useful life. To explain this idea though, I need...
