Ubuntu is Coming to Smartphones: What Could You Use It For?
Canonical announced today that Ubuntu is headed for smartphones, touting the full capability of a Linux PC in a gesture-based mobile version of the OS. Here's Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth's virtual keynote:
Galaxy Nexus owners will be able to flash Ubuntu onto their phones in the very near future, but retail devices with Ubuntu pre-loaded likely won't be available until early 2014. The Verge's hands-on video offers a glimpse at an attractive, gesture-intensive, and somewhat laggy early build.
The gesture control in the above videos remind me a bit of touch control on the Surface RT - simple and functional but not immediately obvious. But I'm fascinated by the prospect of, say, throwing a LAMP stack on an Ubuntu tablet dev machine.
