I guess you have noticed that the whole field of IT infrastructure has
changed and is still changing significantly with the opportunities that
the cloud is offering. Especially Amazon with its AWS
is acting as a frontrunner in this (new) market. They make it very easy
to ‘create/set up’ the infrastructure you need at a certain moment.
There is also a downside with this situation. Because it is so easy to
set up new infrastructures there is the risk that (parts of) the
infrastructure stays in place although it is no longer necessary.
Another risk could be that because it is so easy to create stuff you
might create (much) more then you actually need. Recently two products
came to my attention that can help you in these situation (and offer a
lot more). The first product is supplied by Amazon itself and is called ‘AWS Trusted Advisor
‘. The other product is CloudCheckr
both products are in beta and free to use so this would be a great time
to compare the products and see which one you prefer.
Of course I did a quick comparison myself. I like the dashboard of
CloudCheckr: it gives a great overview of all your products and which
items can be improved (with explanation why).
The part that I like about the Trusted Advisor is the graphical
representation of how your products are doing on cost optimization,
security, fault tolerance and performance. You can see in one view the
So which one is better? I know you don’t want to hear this but I can’t
say (yet). I just scratched the surface of both products but since they
are both in beta and currently free this is the time to dive into them
and give them a more thorough look. If you prefer one solution over the
other please let me know.
