Companies Don't Want to Bet on the Wrong SDN Vendor
The technology for software-defined networking is already here, but vendors are still thinking about how they want to commoditize it, and that is the main thing that is holding back its widespread adoption according to Patrick Moorhead of Forbes.com:
Vendors are asking enterprise IT to bet on their vision and follow their path, but the “substitutability” of the products is anything but clear, and picking the wrong vendor can have catastrophic impact on a company’s business
Moorhead expects SDN to follow a similar pattern that network servers followed moving from mainframes to x86. When SDN hits that stage "where all of the cost is wrung out and the industry gravitates around a set of commodity building blocks," Moorhead says, companies will then start to adopt SDN on a massive scale.
